Updated Manufacturing & Delivery Schedule (also meet Frankenboard & Lil Chris)

Dear OpenBCI Community,

Firstly, thank you so much for your patience. We’ve been very busy since our last update. As it turns out, our manufacturing lead times are much longer than we anticipated and we were very diligent about concluding our design phase. As a result, we must inform you that OpenBCI units will likely not be ready to ship until the end of August. With that said, I assure you OpenBCI IS coming! We sincerely apologize for the miscalculation in our previously announced delivery dates. Now that we are officially transitioning out of design and into manufacturing, we believe that this new shipment date is accurate.

You should be pleased to know that we spent these past few months refining the quality of the OpenBCI hardware design, reassuring ourselves we provide you with the best technology possible. For better or worse, our mindset has been quality over timeliness. Because practical EEG is such a difficult challenge (one we hope to help you to help the world solve), it has been our utmost priority that OpenBCI works and works well!

We’re excited to announce that today we initiated the pre-production run of (what we believe to be) our final OpenBCI board designs. We expect to receive those units in the coming weeks. As soon as we confirm their efficacy we will initiate a full manufacturing run of all of the OpenBCI Kickstarter rewards. We will keep you up-to-date as this process unfolds.

Below you can see one of our working OpenBCI hardware prototypes (a.k.a. “Frankenboard”) mounted onto the latest iteration of the Spiderclaw 3D-printed headset. Below that photo you can see the newest member of the OpenBCI team, Lil Chris. He is our official headset model. Lil Chris, named in honor of his creator, was sculpted and painted by Joel’s long-time friend Chris Ingram.

Though, for the most part, we’ve had our heads down, finishing up the hardware designs and preparing for manufacturing, we’ve had a few opportunities to get out and about to share OpenBCI with the world. Check out the photos below from our presence at the 2nd annual Neurogaming Conference, as well as the recent Van Alen Institute meetup, “How Does The Brain Respond To The City?” We want to send a big thanks to Zack Lynch for coordinating this year’s Neurogaming, and Mark Collins of Columbia’s GSAPP Cloud Lab and the Van Alen Institute for inviting us to present at the meetup. While in the Bay Area, we also had the opportunity to do an impromptu hangout with the Cognitive Technology Group at Berkeley; they’re up to some really cool stuff!

We cannot emphasize enough how much we appreciate your support and your patience. In all honesty, making OpenBCI is not easy. In fact, it’s very hard! We’re doing everything in our power to provide you with robust, customizable, and accessible EEG technology that also has a strong community infrastructure to support it.

Look forward to hearing from us in the coming weeks about the pre-production units.

All the best,
Joel, Conor, and The OpenBCI Team
